AutoEdge VIN Lookup privacy policy

This policy covers the AutoEdge VIN Lookup browser extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge. It says exactly what the extension reads, what leaves your browser, and what it never does. Last updated September 28, 2026.

What the extension does

AutoEdge VIN Lookup has one purpose. When you point at a vehicle identification number (VIN) on a web page, it shows an "Appraise in AutoEdge" button. When you click that button, it opens the vehicle in AutoEdge's Appraise screen in a new tab. It does nothing else.

What it reads

When the extension is on for a page, it reads only the text directly under your pointer, on your own computer, to check whether that text is a VIN. The check (17 characters and a valid check digit) runs inside your browser. It does not read the rest of the page, and it does not read form fields, passwords, cookies or your browsing history. It keeps nothing it reads.

Where it is on

The extension is on only in these places:

  • Nine wholesale auction sites, automatically: Manheim (manheim.com), OVE.com (ove.com), OPENLANE (openlane.com), ADESA (adesa.com), ACV Auctions (acvauctions.com), SmartAuction (smartauction.biz), America's Auto Auction (americasaa.com and americasautoauction.com) and EDGE Pipeline (edgepipeline.com). Your browser lists these sites in the details of the install prompt.
  • A tab you turn it on for: clicking the extension's toolbar button turns it on for that one tab until the page changes.
  • A site you choose: "Always on for this site" in the toolbar button's menu turns it on for that one site, after your browser asks you to allow it. "Turn off for this site" turns it off again.
  • Nowhere else. On every other site it does nothing.

AutoEdge is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by these auction companies. Their names identify the sites where the extension works.

What leaves your browser

The extension makes no network requests of its own and sends nothing in the background. The only thing that leaves your browser is the VIN you click: the extension opens a new tab at www.autoedgeusa.com with that VIN in the page address. That tab is the AutoEdge website, and your browser requests it the same way it requests any web page, so AutoEdge's servers receive the VIN in that request and may record the address in ordinary server logs. What AutoEdge does with information on its website is covered by the AutoEdge Privacy Policy. If you are not signed in to AutoEdge, the website asks you to sign in before it shows the vehicle.

What it stores

The extension stores no data of its own: no VINs, no history and no settings. Your browser itself remembers one thing for it: the sites you turned on with "Always on for this site," together with the permission you gave for each. Turning a site off, or removing the extension, clears them.

What it never does

  • It has no account and no sign-in of its own. Signing in to AutoEdge happens on the AutoEdge website, not in the extension.
  • It does not read cookies, passwords or form fields.
  • It does not track your browsing or record the pages you visit.
  • It contains no analytics, no advertising and no third-party code, and it does not load or run code from the internet.
  • It does not sell, rent or share any information with anyone.
  • It never starts a vehicle appraisal on its own. You enter the mileage and start it in AutoEdge.

Permissions it asks for

Your browser shows these permissions when you install the extension or turn it on for a site:

  • Access to the nine auction sites: so VIN detection works on those sites without any setup.
  • Active tab and scripting: so clicking the toolbar button can turn VIN detection on for the tab you are looking at.
  • Context menus: for the "Always on for this site" and "Turn off for this site" items on the toolbar button.
  • Optional access to a site you choose: requested only when you pick "Always on for this site," and only for that one site.

Limited Use

AutoEdge's use of information received through the AutoEdge VIN Lookup extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The VIN you click is used only to open that vehicle in AutoEdge.

Changes to this policy

If the extension ever changes what it reads, sends or stores, this policy will be updated before that version is published, and the date at the top of this page will change.
